If
you crave some undersea adventures during your
Emerald Isle vacation, the waters around Emerald
Isle and the Outer Banks represent one of the
largest shipping graveyards in the world. The
Outer Banks are world renowned for their wreck
diving opportunities, with literally hundreds
of shipwrecks up and down the North Carolina coastline.
One of the most famous for a
great diving experience is the wreck of the German
WWII submarine U-352, which went down virtually
intact off the coast of Emerald Isle. There's
even a special exhibit featuring a scaled down
replica of the sub at the North
Carolina Aquarium located in Pine Knoll Shores.
The warm, clear waters of the
Atlantic off the coast of Emerald Isle offer outstanding
conditions for scuba diving. The shipwrecks have
created artificial reefs that team with undersea
life, making the area equally exciting for marine
animal discoveries.
There
are several outstanding dive companies located
in the area that can assist you with guided tours
of many of the finest wrecks available. The map
to the left shows the locations of some of the
best shipwrecks available for diving in the Emerald
Isle area, but you can also venture further north
and south for even more wreck diving experiences.
An excellent website which lists
many of the wrecks along the NC coastline can
be found at the website of one of the local dive
clubs - BFDC.
It's and excellent resource to discover the history
of many of the shipwrecks, as well as stunning
photography of the actual wrecks.
So if you're an underwater adventure
seeker, then the scuba diving available off the
coast of Emerald Isle is just what you're looking
for. Whether you're a beginner diver or an expert,
there are great dive opportunities waiting here
for you!
