get to a number of the inhabited and uninhabited
islands near Emerald Isle, there are numerous
ferry services to get you where you need to go.
The largest is the Cedar Island
to Okracoke Ferry, which takes passengers and
vehicles to and from the charming fishing community
of Okracoke. Okracoke is only accessible by boat,
making it a unique area adventure.
To the west of Emerald Isle
is Bear Island and Hammocks Beach State Park.
A small ferry service run by the State Park shuttles
visitors through the estuaries and tidal islands
of Bogue Sound to the uninhabited Bear Island
for a pristine beach or camping adventure.
East of Emerald Isle is Shackleford
Banks and Cape Lookout, two more outstanding uninhabited
islands to explore. Shackleford Banks is home
to the wild Shackleford Horses, direct descendants
of Spanish Arabian horses. How the horses got
there is a mystery, but most believe they are
the survivors of a wrecked Spanish ship off the
coast of the Banks. Cape Lookout offers stunning
beaches, world class shelling and even some snorkeling,
along with historic Cape Lookout Light House.
There are numerous ferry services offering a variety
of excursions to visit these magnificent islands.
